About Jo Simmer
My name is Jo (Johannes) Simmer. I´m a 35 year old working artist, base in Innsbruck Tirol.
I was born in February 1989 in a small tyrolean town in between the austrian alps. I´d consider myself lucky to not only have grown up in this calm environment but also being alive in the 1990´s, which where the perfect times to be around. I remember going to school, hanging out with my friends, enjoying these long and hot summer days spending time outside, slowly growing up. Far off internet times. Deep inside the analogue world. I´ve always prefered crafting over playing computer games and enjoyed playing with lego or going to the forrest over being in front of the tv.
Since my earliest childhood days I was a big dreamer and wanted to just create. A bit of an introvert too I spent long hours inside my mind working on ideas. Creativity to me isn´t just an active process of building, painting, constructing something. First and foremost it was always a way of thinking and perceiving the world for me.
As I grew up my expressive side seemed to be getting pushed in the background, since I´ve made a conservative, more safe decision to work a normal job and study at the university. I thought that´s what I need and what would make me happy. But unfortunately it didn´t. I got pretty unhappy for a while and almost stopped creating completely.
Although I stopped to work on projects actively I never gave up on daydreaming, or simply beeing creative.
So as a form of therapy, and to get back on track expressing myself, I started with my first paintings on canvas and I remember how amazed I was by the whole process. I was overwhelmed how it would create such a relieve and just ease myself. The way the brush strokes felt and how the color would behave just drew me into it.
What fascinates me the most about painting is that it´s an intuitive process which will stay open until the end, and unlike other forms of art like music or film, things cant be undone or only hardly edited. Especially in the later stages of the painting.
So a brush stroke once set, will create facts and at the same time predetermine the outcome. One decission can change the wohle painting, can change the whole story. So it´s a perfect example for life.
That´s what I like about painting and art in general so much, that it helps me to constantly learn more about myself.
Through the years I´ve worked on many different paintings, prints, and artpieces that slowly but surely started piling up in my flat. (As many artists I focused more on the creating part, than on the selling part)
So having all those pieces in my collection the next question to me would be, what should happen to all these paintings and artpieces?
And how could I share my art with as many people at the same time, so everyone could have their individual artpiece of mine.
Finally I decided, that offering my art as high quality canvas prints would be the perfect option to go with. Not only would that make my art available to many people but also the customer could decide certain aspects such as size and frames for the piece.
This is why I´ve created my own online shop https://josimmerart.com/ to make my art available to the whole world.
So, this is my story and if you feel like supporting me on my path or just find my art to be according to your taste, feel free to choose your desired piece to spice up your life.
All the best wishes go out to you
Lots of love
Jo Simmer
